Erythropoietin promotes hippocampal mitochondrial function and enhances cognition in mice

Abstract Erythropoietin (EPO) improves neuronal mitochondrial function and cognition in adults after brain injury those afflicted by psychiatric disorders. However, the influence of EPO on mitochondria during development remains unexplored. We previously observed that stimulates hippocampal-specific maturation synaptogenesis early postnatal mice. Here we show promotes respiration developing hippocampus increasing content enhancing cellular respiratory potential. Ultrastructurally, profiles total vesicle were greater presynaptic axon terminals, suggesting enhances oxidative metabolism synaptic transmission capabilities. Behavioural tests hippocampus-dependent memory at adulthood, showed spatial short-term memory. Collectively, identify a role for murine promoting throughout development, which corresponds to enhanced adulthood.
